President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated yesterday that no additional allowances will be granted to public sector employees until the third instalment of the salary increment is implemented in 2027, regardless of strikes or protest actions.
Speaking at an event in Kandy, the President said it is unreasonable to demand further allowances while a scheduled salary increase is pending for January 2027. He noted that the government will need to allocate Rs. 330 billion for the third instalment, following expenditures of Rs. 110 billion for salary increments in 2025 and Rs. 220 billion in 2026.
He further explained that any consideration of additional allowances will take place only after the third salary increment is granted and its impact on the national budget is fully assessed.
The President also pointed out that some trade unions continue to demand increased allowances despite receiving significant salary increases, reiterating that such requests will not be entertained until the planned salary adjustment process is completed.
