President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has reaffirmed his commitment to taking necessary action for the advancement of national, religious, and social development during a meeting with the Maha Sangha in Kandy.
Speaking at the President’s House on July 17, the President emphasized the importance of seeking the guidance of the Maha Sangha in the governance process.
The meeting was attended by senior monks from the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters, and discussions focused on key issues affecting the country’s religious and social spheres.
The Maha Sangha highlighted the urgent need to amend outdated laws such as the Buddhist Temporalities Ordinance, address challenges in monastic education, and safeguard Sri Lanka’s religious and cultural heritage.
A proposal was made to establish a Buddha Sasana Task Force Advisory Council to guide state involvement in religious affairs and promote religious advancement.
In response, President Dissanayake directed officials to expedite the necessary legal reforms to support the religious sector.
Ministers Hiniduma Sunil Senevi and Harshana Nanayakkara also attended the discussions, which were seen as a significant step toward aligning government policy with religious and cultural priorities.
