President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has called on all citizens to unite in determination and brotherhood to rebuild Sri Lanka, in his message marking the 78th National Independence Day.
The President said Sri Lanka is commemorating Independence Day at a historic moment, as the country steadily moves forward while regaining economic stability despite significant challenges. He noted that within the past eighteen months, collective efforts have led to tangible economic progress and helped position Sri Lanka internationally as a nation guided by a clean and principled political culture.
He emphasized that the next key objective is to ensure that the benefits of macroeconomic recovery reach communities of all ethnicities across every province, stating that inclusive growth is essential for sustainable national development.
Referring to the recent major natural disaster, President Dissanayake said that although the experience was painful, the strong foundations built over the past eighteen months enabled the country to move forward with recovery and restoration, with the support of all stakeholders.
The President acknowledged that since independence, Sri Lanka had missed several opportunities to unite and achieve its national aspirations, but stressed that this time the country is determined not to repeat past mistakes. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a resilient, dignified, and advanced nation while safeguarding the country’s culture, history, and heritage.
Expressing confidence in the strength and character of the people, President Dissanayake said Sri Lanka can realise the long-held dream of becoming a prosperous and virtuous nation in the 21st century. He concluded by urging all citizens to come together to build the shared vision of “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life,” and extended his wishes for a meaningful Independence Day that inspires progress toward the true goals of freedom.
