President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has called on Tamil and Muslim opposition parties to support the Government’s efforts to strengthen inter-community understanding and build a peaceful, inclusive Sri Lanka.
At a meeting held this afternoon (22) at the Presidential Secretariat, the President emphasised that every citizen must have the freedom to live with dignity and full respect for their religious and cultural identities. He affirmed that the Government would not allow the country to fall into “any form of racist trap” and urged all parties to back the national initiative promoting unity and coexistence.
The meeting was convened to brief representatives of Tamil and Muslim opposition parties on preparations for Sri Lanka Day, scheduled for December. The event aims to bring all communities together and foster mutual respect and national harmony.
Party leaders welcomed the initiative, commending the Government’s commitment to creating a shared platform for all Sri Lankans. They also put forward several proposals to support the programme.
Participants further pledged their full support for the national “A Nation United” mission to eradicate the drug menace, along with other Government programmes that advance national and religious harmony.
Extensive discussions were held on the organisational aspects of Sri Lanka Day, coordinated by the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs. The President instructed the organising committee to ensure the event is designed in a way that encourages participation from people of all political, religious and cultural backgrounds—reflecting a collective commitment to unity and peace.
