President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has urged newly appointed Sri Lankan diplomats to actively communicate the country’s ongoing political transformation to the international community.
Speaking at the Presidential Secretariat on May 15, the President emphasized that diplomats must play a key role in promoting Sri Lanka’s new direction and enhancing its global image.
He called on the diplomats to serve as ambassadors of change and contribute to shaping the country’s future on the world stage.
The President highlighted the importance of prioritizing the welfare of Sri Lankans living abroad and ensuring fair, non-discriminatory consular services.
He also stressed that Sri Lankan missions overseas should serve as a home for citizens and operate with efficiency and dedication.
Diplomats were instructed to focus on attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), opening new markets for Sri Lankan entrepreneurs, and promoting tourism.
President Dissanayake assured that the government would fully support diplomats in their roles and protect their dignity and integrity.
A group of experienced officials were officially appointed as heads of Sri Lanka’s diplomatic missions, including postings to India, the UK, Pakistan, Japan, UAE, Cuba, and the UN in New York.
Among the appointees are former Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya as the Permanent Representative to the UN and Rear Admiral Fred Senevirathna as High Commissioner to Pakistan.
The meeting was also attended by Foreign Secretary Aruni Ranaraja and Senior Additional Secretary to the President, Roshan Gamage.
