President urges global leaders to unite for a safer world

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, addressing the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, urged world leaders to unite in building a safe and just world for future generations. He emphasized that nations must act collectively rather than in isolation.

Speaking at the UN Headquarters in New York, the President expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered delivery of aid, and the release of hostages in line with UN agreements. He stressed that strong international pressure is necessary to halt ongoing violence and killings.

President Dissanayake also highlighted global poverty and inequality, describing them as urgent catastrophes that require immediate attention. He underscored the importance of education as a foundation for national and global progress and called for support to help developing countries overcome debt constraints that hinder social development.

On the global drug challenge, the President outlined Sri Lanka’s initiatives to combat trafficking and abuse, urging international cooperation to enforce stricter laws, limit traffickers’ cross-border movements, and expand rehabilitation programs.

Addressing corruption, he described it as a destructive force undermining democracy, development, and social well-being. Sri Lanka has embarked on anti-corruption measures to protect future generations, and he encouraged all nations to adopt a culture of integrity and transparency.

President Dissanayake condemned war, extremism, and racism, emphasizing the need for international action to protect innocent civilians, uphold human rights, and promote peace. He highlighted the ongoing suffering in Gaza and called for the early implementation of UN resolutions supporting a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.

Focusing on Sri Lanka’s progress, he outlined the government’s vision of “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life,” emphasizing corruption-free governance, poverty eradication, digitalization, and investment in education and healthcare. He also proposed the creation of a neutral, sovereign Artificial Intelligence zone to ensure equitable access to digital tools and sustainable development globally.

Concluding his address, President Dissanayake urged nations to work together, not in competition, to build a safer, more dignified, and equitable world for present and future generations, fulfilling the United Nations’ mission of peace, equality, and global cooperation.
