President targets customs corruption with major overhaul

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, during his appearance on TV program pledged to overhaul Sri Lanka’s customs system and port operations to combat corruption and inefficiency.

He highlighted that out of 7.8 million containers arriving in Sri Lanka, only 15% enter the country, while the rest are transferred elsewhere.

The government is actively working on modernizing port infrastructure, with the upcoming openings of the Western and Eastern Terminals expected to boost container traffic to 11.5 million by 2030.

The President mentioned progress in customs reforms, including the establishment of a new container inspection facility in Kerawalapitiya and the exploration of another site in Bloemendhal.

He praised customs officers for generating a record revenue of over 1.5 trillion rupees but warned that those engaging in corruption would face strict consequences.

Addressing past instances of mismanagement, such as the sale of 538 Prado vehicles under investigation, the President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to rooting out corruption.

“Criticisms of customs continue, but significant improvements are underway,” the President stated, emphasizing the government’s dedication to transparency and accountability.

President Dissanayake assured the public that ongoing reforms reflect a “new way of politics,” aiming for a more efficient and ethical system.
