President says war’s end didn’t bring complete freedom

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that Sri Lanka is still not fully free, even years after the end of the war.

Addressing the National War Heroes’ Commemoration Ceremony in Battaramulla, he emphasized that true victory lies not in ending war but in establishing lasting peace and the rule of law.

He reflected on the immense suffering, bloodshed, and tears endured by the nation, stressing that such horrors must never be repeated.

The President warned that racism is once again being used in both the North and South as a political tool, threatening national unity.

He noted that no one took up arms out of a desire for war, but rather in pursuit of peace, and reiterated that peace is the only path to complete victory.

Dissanayake urged the military and public servants to remain steadfast in their commitment to preserving peace and national harmony.

He called on the people to honour the sacrifices of fallen heroes not with statues alone, but by building a peaceful, just, and united country.

The President highlighted that true freedom includes economic independence, noting that Sri Lanka has lost its ability to make sovereign economic decisions.

He insisted that establishing law, defeating crime and drugs, and ensuring justice for all are essential for achieving genuine national freedom.

Concluding his address, President Dissanayake said the path to a proud and respected Sri Lanka must be built on peace, reconciliation, and a shared love for the motherland.
