Attention was focused on the Kelani River flood control project, water management initiatives in Colombo city, the restoration of Beira Lake, and the need for a special housing programme for low-income families in Ratmalana and Moratuwa.

These priorities were discussed during a meeting held on Monday (18) between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and senior officials of the Urban Development Authority at the Presidential Secretariat.

Minister of Urban Development Bimal Ratnayake emphasised the need for a special implementation model to ensure effective execution and long-term sustainability of selected development projects.

The President stressed that funds allocated for new UDA projects must be fully utilised within the current financial year.

He also highlighted the importance of completing projects in coordination with relevant institutions while clearly defining responsibilities for implementation and maintenance.

The meeting reviewed several major initiatives, including flood mitigation along the Kelani River, urban water management schemes, and housing programmes aimed at improving living conditions in Colombo’s suburban areas.

Senior officials, including Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekara, Ministry Secretary Senior Prof. Kapila Perera, and heads of key state agencies, participated in the discussions.
