President orders crackdown on drug trafficking and underworld in prisons

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has directed officials to take immediate action to combat drug trafficking and underworld activities within the prison system. These instructions were given during a meeting at the Presidential Secretariat on 30th of December, as reported by the President’s Media Division (PMD).

The President stressed the importance of accelerating legal proceedings for inmates involved in such activities and proposed the adoption of online systems to streamline the judicial process. He also highlighted the need to improve infrastructure to support these digital systems effectively.

Addressing concerns over certain officials’ involvement in irregular activities within prisons, the President ordered disciplinary actions and legal measures against those found guilty.

The meeting also discussed the urgent need to fill vacancies in the Government Analyst’s Department. Key participants included Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara, Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and National Integration Ayesha Jinasena, Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, and other officials.
