President Mbeki shares insights on nation-building and reconciliation

South Africa’s former President Thabo Mbeki shared profound insights on Sri Lanka’s future by recounting South Africa’s liberation struggle, reconciliation, and nation-building journey during a discussion with CMG Group Director Chevaan Daniel.

Speaking at Cinnamon Life in the presence of top CEOs and diplomats, Mbeki emphasized the importance of defining a nation’s future by its people and recognizing pivotal moments in history that require inclusive negotiation and constitutional reforms.

He highlighted how the African National Congress (ANC) involved all citizens in the transition, ensuring that even opposition groups participated in government, leading to international acceptance and support.

Mbeki stressed honesty and constant consultation with the electorate as vital for maintaining trust and political support, while also underscoring that the liberation was a mass movement of millions, not an elite effort.

He warned against attempts to disrupt progress and urged national dialogue involving all societal sectors to safeguard the nation’s future.

Ultimately, Mbeki affirmed that a true revolution is owned and defended by the people themselves, explaining that the ANC’s strength lay in its deep-rooted connection with the South African populace.
