President insists negligent police officers must resign or face removal

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stressed that no crime should be hidden with the passage of time and assured that criminals will be brought to justice regardless of when or where the crimes were committed.

He said the government is committed to ensuring punishment without discrimination and will not allow time to be an obstacle to justice.

The President made these remarks while addressing the 159th Police Day celebrations held today (03) at the Thimbirigasyaya Police Stadium under the theme “Let’s Protect the Law – Let’s Value Peace.”

Highlighting the grave responsibility of the Police Department in combating the drug menace and crimes involving illegal weapons, he affirmed that the government will protect and support officers who carry out their duties diligently and fearlessly.

He also outlined the government’s plans to strengthen the police service by recruiting more personnel, increasing salaries and allowances, and developing a modern, technologically advanced law enforcement system.

However, the President cautioned that while most officers serve with dedication, a minority have failed to fulfill their duties.

“It must be said, even if reluctantly, that a handful have neglected their duty. I urge those officers to abandon such practices. Otherwise, they should resign. If not done voluntarily, we are prepared to remove them from service. We must re-establish the respect that every department rightfully deserves,” he declared.
