Sri Lankan President Anura Dissanayake has expressed interest in joining BRICS through a letter sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Sri Lanka’s ambassador to Moscow, Pakir Amza.
In the letter, President Dissanayake also requested that other BRICS nations consider Sri Lanka as a partner country and expressed hope for a favorable response.
The ambassador clarified that the letter was sent in October 2024.
That same month, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijita Herath announced that the government had officially applied for BRICS membership and for inclusion in the New Development Bank.
Herath highlighted that Sri Lanka sees this partnership as a means to promote mutual cooperation, peace, and development within the framework of multilateralism and the UN Charter.
Additionally, it was reported that President Dissanayake had sought Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support for Sri Lanka’s bid to join BRICS.
