President Dissanayake calls for nation-building rooted in historical heritage

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized that national progress is impossible without a meaningful connection to a country’s historical heritage.

He made these remarks during a ceremonial address at the Ruhunu Kataragama sacred site on July 10, according to the President’s Media Division.

Earlier in the day, President Dissanayake visited the Kataragama sacred grounds, engaged in religious observances, and met with the Chief Incumbent of the Kirivehera Rajamaha Viharaya, Venerable Kobawaka Dhamminda Nayaka Thera.

He also attended the final Randoli Maha Perahera of the annual Esala Festival, where he witnessed the ceremonial placement of the sacred relic casket on the tusker.

In his speech, the President underscored that Sri Lanka must pursue a development path rooted in its historical identity, as all developed nations have done.

He highlighted the critical role of Buddhism in shaping Sri Lanka’s civilisation and noted the importance of cultural festivals in reviving moral and social values.

President Dissanayake pointed out that the Ruhunu Kataragama Perahera has continued for 2,186 years, demonstrating its deep connection to the people across generations.

He thanked all those involved in organizing the procession, including the Chief Incumbent of Kirivehera, for their contributions to preserving this cultural tradition.
