President Anura Kumara Dissanayake dismissed allegations that Sri Lanka is at risk of bankruptcy in 2028 when debt repayments are set to resume.
Speaking in Parliament, he assured that his government is implementing measures to avoid a repeat of the economic hardships faced in 2021 and 2022.
“Even in 2028, our administration will remain in power, and we will not allow a crisis like 2021 and 2022 to happen again,” the President stated. He added that foreign reserves are projected to reach USD 15.1 billion by 2028, a goal his government is actively pursuing.
The President also pointed to significant progress in debt restructuring, revealing that USD 12.55 billion in debt, including USD 1.7 billion in defaulted payments, has been renegotiated.
He further explained that USD 11.55 billion of the restructured debt stemmed from loans borrowed between 2015 and 2019.
“This advice should have been given during that period. Had it been, we might have avoided bankruptcy. Unfortunately, it comes too late,” he remarked.
