A high-level discussion on the expected El Niño weather conditions and national preparedness measures was held yesterday morning (June 11) at the Presidential Secretariat under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The meeting brought together officials from key institutions, including the Department of Meteorology, Department of Irrigation, Central Environmental Authority, Mahaweli Authority, Disaster Management Centre, Lanka Electricity Company, and the National System Operator.
During the discussion, attention was focused on the potential impact of El Niño on food security, drinking water supply, and energy generation, along with urgent measures needed to manage these critical sectors.
Officials also reviewed reservoir water levels, agricultural planning, water distribution systems, and overall energy management strategies to reduce possible disruptions.
It was noted that the upcoming El Niño conditions may be similar to those experienced in 2016–2017, with water management plans already being adjusted accordingly.
Authorities have also decided to begin the Yala cultivation season about one and a half months earlier this year as a precautionary step to reduce agricultural risks.
The President instructed relevant agencies to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, safeguard national food security, and maintain adequate water availability for both farming and household consumption.
He further emphasized that, with proper planning and coordination, the country can effectively manage the challenges posed by global climate-related events, similar to responses during previous crises such as Cyclone Ditwah and geopolitical disruptions.
Senior officials, including Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Senior Additional Secretary Kapila Janaka Bandara, and heads of several key agencies, participated in the discussion.
