President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his Sinhala and Tamil New Year message, called on the public to uphold cultural values and strengthen national unity as Sri Lanka moves forward amid ongoing challenges.
He described the Sinhala and Tamil New Year as the foremost cultural festival of the country, symbolising renewal of both body and spirit.
He highlighted that traditional customs, rituals, and religious observances carried out at auspicious times reflect the nation’s shared identity and strong social and cultural bonds.
The President stated that Sri Lanka’s future development must be guided by its cultural heritage and long-standing traditions, which form the foundation of national progress.
He further noted that New Year values promote compassion, respect, unity, and harmony with nature, and should be practiced throughout the year, not only during the festive season.
Referring to recent challenges, he said the country had demonstrated resilience in the face of natural disasters and was also managing external pressures, including those arising from conflicts in the Middle East, through planned government responses.
He urged citizens to strengthen solidarity, sharing, and togetherness as guiding principles for overcoming difficulties and building a better future.
Finally, he expressed his vision of a “Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life” and extended heartfelt wishes for a peaceful and joyous Sinhala and Tamil New Year to all Sri Lankans.
