President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his Vesak message, highlighted the enduring relevance of Buddhist teachings in promoting peace, coexistence and reconciliation in modern society.

Describing Vesak as the most sacred celebration for Buddhists worldwide, commemorating the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Lord Buddha, the President said Buddhism offers a timeless and practical message of peace rooted in loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity.
He stressed that lasting peace in society can only be achieved by first cultivating inner spiritual peace within individuals, noting that this Buddhist approach is more relevant today than ever before.
The President also pointed out that peace, coexistence and reconciliation are central teachings not only of Lord Buddha but of all enlightened teachers.
He said Vesak is not merely a religious observance but also a significant cultural celebration that reflects Sri Lanka’s identity, unity and artistic heritage.
President Dissanayake noted that religious activities such as observing sil, meditation, Dhamma sermons and almsgiving, together with Vesak traditions including dansals, devotional songs, lanterns and pandals, help strengthen mutual understanding and harmony among communities.
He further invited all citizens to embrace the values of non-violence, compassion and boundless loving-kindness in their daily lives.
Extending his Vesak wishes, the President expressed hope that the teachings of the Dhamma would bring peace, comfort and serenity to all people.
