President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the government aims to transform Sri Lanka’s healthcare system to meet internationally recognised standards, not just implement limited reforms.
Speaking at a pre-Budget discussion on the Health and Mass Media Ministry, the President said the government is ready to allocate the necessary funding to modernise the country’s healthcare sector.
He instructed officials to prioritise strengthening primary healthcare services, expand the Arogya Suwa Seva Centres programme, and submit science-based proposals to improve the quality of healthcare nationwide.
The President also stressed the need for a technology-driven hospital system, including digital health services, electronic health records, telemedicine, and advanced medical equipment to improve patient care across the island.
Discussions also focused on expanding the Suwa Seriya ambulance service, procuring internationally compliant high-tech ambulances, improving medicine procurement and quality testing, and ensuring an uninterrupted supply of essential drugs.
Officials confirmed that 26 previously suspended major healthcare construction projects have resumed, while a total of 48 projects are currently underway, alongside discussions on healthcare workforce development and media sector initiatives.
