Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed G.M.R.D. Aponsu as the new Secretary to the Ministry of Energy, marking a key administrative change in the sector.

The official letter of appointment was handed over on the afternoon of April 17 at the Presidential Secretariat by Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

Aponsu, a senior officer of the Sri Lanka Planning Service, succeeds Professor Udayanga Hemapala, who resigned earlier the same day.

He previously served as Senior Additional Secretary to the President on Finance and Economic Affairs, bringing with him extensive expertise in national planning, public finance, macroeconomic forecasting, development financing, and tax policy.

During his tenure at the Presidential Secretariat, Aponsu led the Finance and Economic Affairs Division, where he played a pivotal role in shaping economic policy and guiding national development priorities.

His academic background includes education at several leading schools and a Bachelor of Science (Special) degree in Physics from the University of Ruhuna. He also holds postgraduate qualifications from the University of Colombo, Australian National University, and IDEAS in Japan.

Over the course of his career, Aponsu has served in key government institutions including the Department of National Planning, Department of National Budget, Department of Inland Revenue, and the Ministry of Education. He has also contributed to academia as a lecturer in Physics at the University of Ruhuna and as a consultant and lecturer in planning and development economics at SLIDA, as well as teaching postgraduate programmes at the University of Colombo’s Institute of Human Resource Advancement.

With this appointment, Aponsu is expected to strengthen policy direction at the Ministry of Energy and play a significant role in advancing Sri Lanka’s economic and development agenda.
