President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that the government will reclaim all state-owned residences allocated to former Presidents once new legislation is enacted in September.
Speaking at a public event in Colombo, he emphasized that the decision is part of his administration’s broader effort to ensure equality before the law and eliminate privileges that erode public trust in governance.
He stressed that corruption will be dealt with firmly, regardless of a person’s status or influence. The President further stated that maintaining luxury housing for former leaders is unacceptable at a time when the nation is facing a severe economic crisis, noting that people should not be burdened with unnecessary expenses while being asked to make sacrifices.
