Port Lincoln Airport has launched Australia’s first 12-month trial of drone technology to enhance security and surveillance.
The drone, remotely operated from Melbourne about 850 kilometres away, is equipped with thermal cameras and follows a pre-programmed flight path at speeds of up to 80 km/h.
Its main role is to monitor the airport perimeter, detecting potential threats from people or wildlife.
The drone also features a speaker system that allows operators to play sounds, music, or even speak directly to individuals, according to Gregory Neyland from MSS Security.
The trial, which took 18 months to prepare, aims to evaluate how effectively the drone can improve and streamline surveillance at airports and potentially other businesses.
Delfina Lanzill from the Lower Eyre Council, which owns the airport, said they are exploring innovative solutions to increase efficiency.
Despite the drone’s introduction, on-site security personnel will continue to operate, with Neyland emphasizing that ground staff are essential for responding to incidents. The drone is intended to support and enhance their work.
