China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd. has deployed its full fleet of disaster-response machinery to support urgent repair work along one of Sri Lanka’s key transport corridors, as authorities work to restore access to communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah.
The company has mobilised 12 heavy-duty machines and a team of technical personnel to the Central Province to accelerate road clearance, slope stabilisation, and infrastructure restoration. Their operations are focused along the A5 route from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, where several supply routes have been cut off and emergency teams are struggling to reach the most severely impacted areas.
The fleet—comprising excavators, backhoes, loaders, flatbed trucks, and dump trucks—is now functioning under the direction of national disaster management authorities. CHEC Port City Colombo’s engineering teams will work continuously to reopen the A5 corridor for emergency services, essential supplies, and community access.
This deployment follows the company’s Rs. 10 million contribution to the Government’s ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Fund, along with an additional Rs. 3 million donated by Port City Colombo’s project management team and CHEC’s regional office.
CHEC Port City Colombo has also provided specialised technical support for emergency bridge repairs, road reconstruction, and engineering assessments as part of the wider national recovery effort.
“Our priority is to act quickly and responsibly. This is an operational deployment aimed at restoring access and supporting affected communities,” said Xiong Hongfeng, Managing Director of CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd.
The machinery was formally handed over by Xiong Hongfeng to the Sri Lanka Army, in the presence of Senior Additional Secretary to the President Russel Aponsu. The handover was facilitated by the Colombo Port City Economic Commission (CPCEC).
CHEC Port City Colombo, a 100% subsidiary of China Harbour Engineering Company Limited, has reaffirmed its commitment to support Sri Lanka not only in its development goals, but also during times of national hardship.
