Police warn of teen tactic to illegally drive early in Victoria

Police in Victoria are warning teenagers that obtaining a driver’s licence interstate before turning 18 could lead to jail time.

Victoria is currently the only Australian state where the legal driving age is 18, prompting some teens to travel to other states—where the age is 17—by falsely listing holiday homes or relatives’ addresses as their primary residence.

Driving instructors say they’re seeing a rise in young people exploiting this loophole, often with parental support.

Authorities stress that providing false information to obtain a licence is a criminal offence.

Despite the trend, the Victorian Government has ruled out lowering the legal driving age, citing road safety concerns.
