Police today stated that former MP and National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa has failed to provide any evidence to support the claims he made during a media conference held on 2nd of October.
Weerawansa appeared before the Tangalle Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau on Thursday (09th) to give a statement regarding his earlier comments about a major drug bust in Tangalle on 22nd of September 2025, involving a suspect known as “Beliatta Sana.”
In his statement, Weerawansa told police that he had never met or identified Weerasinghe Sanath (also known as Beliatta Sana or Puwakdandawe Sana) as a member of the JVP.
He further clarified that his remarks about drugs being brought in and raids being conducted “with state sponsorship” were general observations about the country’s situation, not specific to the Tangalle case.
Weerawansa said his claim linking the suspect to ownership of the drug-carrying boat was based on media reports available at the time.
The police added that Weerawansa denied his earlier suggestion that the President had visited or dined at the suspect’s residence, explaining that the President had only eaten at a hotel in the area during the local government election period.
He also told investigators that he believed the delay in arresting the suspect might have been due to state influence or interference.
Police confirmed that Weerawansa provided no evidence to support his public statements and said any false or misleading claims identified during the ongoing investigation would be reported to court, with legal action to follow if necessary.
