
The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered strict disciplinary action against officers found guilty of serious misconduct, including sexual abuse, corruption, and discreditable conduct.
In recent months, multiple police officers have been arrested on charges such as sexual harassment, bribery, and abuse of power.
In the latest incident, three police officers from the Matara Division were suspended over misconduct at a spa in Walgama, where they allegedly demanded services without payment and clashed with the manager.
An internal investigation found the officers guilty of misconduct, abuse of authority, and discreditable behaviour, leading to disciplinary action.
Chairman of the National Police Commission (NPC), Lalith Ekanayake, confirmed that the NPC directed the IGP to take appropriate action after reviewing the situation report.
The Police Spokesman emphasized that any officer found involved in illegal or corrupt activities would face disciplinary and legal consequences following internal inquiries.
In January, the Officer-in-Charge of Medirigiriya Police was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a Woman Police Constable (WPC) under his command.
In February, a police constable in Mallavi was arrested for allegedly harassing schoolgirls while intoxicated during a public event, sparking outrage after a video went viral.
On July 15, a Sub-Inspector from the Tangalle Police Station was produced in court for allegedly sexually assaulting and threatening a female colleague. He was released on bail, with the next hearing scheduled for July 28.
In 2025, several police officers were arrested across the country for accepting bribes, raising ongoing concerns about corruption in the police force.
The most recent bribery case involved the arrest of a Police Constable and a Constable Driver on July 9 for accepting Rs. 180,000 from a three-wheeler driver, based on a complaint to the Bribery Commission.
