Sarvajana Balaya National Organiser and former Minister Dilum Amunugama has been summoned by Police to provide a statement over controversial remarks made during a recent media briefing, following complaints that the comments may have prejudiced a minor linked to an ongoing child abuse case.
Police Spokesman F. U. Wootler stated that investigations are underway after concerns were raised that the remarks may have caused distress to a 15-year-old victim and witness involved in court proceedings.
The controversy emerged after Amunugama referred to information allegedly received by his party in connection with a separate case, including a statement that sparked strong backlash on social media over the language used.
Responding to the criticism, Amunugama clarified that his remarks were not directed at the child involved in the ongoing case and said the comments related to a different incident reported from the Nittambuwa area. He also expressed regret if the statement had caused any distress.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has requested a Police investigation, warning that the remarks could amount to a violation under the Assistance to and Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses Act.
The Ministry also urged both media institutions and social media users to refrain from sharing related content further in order to protect the child from additional trauma.
