Police probe foreign criminals’ role in melbourne Synagogue attack after arrest

Police have arrested a 21-year-old Werribee man in connection with the firebombing of Melbourne’s Adass Israel Synagogue in December 2023, as part of an ongoing global investigation into the attack’s possible overseas links.

AFP Deputy Commissioner for National Security Krissy Barrett revealed that authorities suspect foreign criminals collaborated with local associates to carry out the arson, which gutted the synagogue and deeply impacted Melbourne’s Jewish community.

“The investigation is not limited to Australia,” Barrett stated. “We’re tracking possible offshore connections and assessing the motivation behind this politically motivated crime.”

Police allege the suspect was one of three individuals involved in breaking into the Ripponlea synagogue and setting the fire. He could face charges including arson, conduct endangering life, and theft of a vehicle.

During the arrest operation, officers executed seven search warrants across several Melbourne suburbs, seizing various items including electronic devices. Further arrests and charges are expected.

Daniel Aghion KC, President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, welcomed the arrest, calling it a step toward justice. “These attacks endanger all Australians. We hope the masterminds will be swiftly brought to justice,” he said.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam urged the public to come forward with any information. “Even the smallest detail could prove critical,” she added.

Barrett reaffirmed that the case remains a top national priority. “This wasn’t just arson — it was a targeted attack on a community,” she said. “We won’t let this go unpunished.”
