An investigation has been launched by the Illegal Property or Assets Investigation Division of the Police Department into the assets of 28 politicians, including sitting Members of Parliament and key ministers from the previous government.
The probe is based on multiple complaints alleging that several politicians had acquired properties using funds suspected to be earned through unlawful means.
Among those named in the investigation are Namal Rajapaksa, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardhana, Mahinda Amaraweera, Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Kanchana Wijesekera, Sagala Ratnayaka, Janaka Thissakuttiarachchi, Wajira Abeywardana, Maheepala Herath, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, Manusha Nanayakkara, Vadivel Suresh, Harshana Rajakaruna, Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, and Shantha Abeysekara.
They are expected to be summoned soon by the Division to provide statements regarding their assets.
Additionally, an inquiry has been initiated into the properties of former Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva.
A senior police official stated that any properties found to have been purchased using illegally earned money will be confiscated, and legal action will follow as necessary.
