Sri Lanka’s Police Department has launched a dedicated Cybercrimes Unit to combat the rise in online offences amid rapid digitalization.
Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe (Jnr.) announced the initiative at the ICT Lawyers Guild’s third Annual General Meeting in Colombo.
The new unit will address threats like data breaches and financial fraud, which are increasing with the growth of the digital economy.
Ranasinghe warned that cybercrime cases are expected to dominate court proceedings in the near future.
ICTLG Chairman Dr. Sunil Abeyratne pledged the guild’s support in shaping policies for the digital economy and enhancing legal readiness.
The guild also aims to boost legal expertise in emerging technologies through workshops and international collaboration.
Plans are underway to promote public dialogue and develop a national cybersecurity policy.
