Sri Lanka Police has clarified that a letter currently circulating on social media, allegedly issued under the signature of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), is entirely false and fabricated.
In a statement, the Police Media Division said the document falsely claims that the IGP instructed the “Bureau for the Investigation of Abuse of Children & Women” to apprehend individuals involved in online activities related to explicit content involving minors.
Police confirmed that no such letter has ever been issued either by the IGP or by any authorized division of the department. They described the document as a deliberate act of misinformation aimed at misleading the public.
The public has been strongly advised to exercise caution and avoid sharing or endorsing such fabricated content, as circulating false documents not only misinforms society but may also amount to a punishable offense under the law.
Reaffirming its commitment, Sri Lanka Police stressed that it remains dedicated to upholding the law, protecting children and women, and ensuring accurate information is conveyed to the public. For reliable updates, citizens have been urged to rely only on official announcements from the Police Media Division.
