Police introduce new rules for renting three-wheelers to tourists

The Sri Lanka Police has introduced new regulations for companies renting out three-wheelers to tourists, aiming to reduce road accidents involving these vehicles.

Police stated that the rise in tourists driving three-wheelers has led to an increase in related accidents, often due to tourists lacking proper training or valid driving licences.

Under the new rules, tourists must possess one of the following documents to rent a three-wheeler: a valid Sri Lankan driving licence, a valid international driving licence accepted in Sri Lanka (which includes the three-wheeler category), or a valid driving licence from their home country.

Police further warned that some rental companies are neglecting these requirements for profit and that legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply.

If a tourist is found driving without a valid licence, the Police will record a statement from the vehicle owner and proceed with legal action.

Providing a three-wheeler to an unlicensed tourist is now considered a punishable offence, with a fine of Rs. 25,000.

Rental companies have been urged to strictly verify licences before renting out vehicles.
