Police dog bites teen during arrest linked to alleged rideshare carjacking

Six teenagers have been arrested following an alleged carjacking spree in Melbourne that ended with a crash at a fast-food drive-through and a police dog bite.

Police said the incident began around 10.30pm near Neil Street in Sunshine, where three individuals allegedly attempted to carjack a rideshare driver. The 28-year-old gig worker was reportedly stabbed and later drove himself to a nearby police station for help. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

About 20 minutes later, another rideshare driver was targeted on Kinnane Crescent in Sunshine. Three young men allegedly approached the driver with machetes, assaulted him, and stole his silver Toyota Camry. Victoria Police said the driver was not physically injured in this second incident.

Police later located the stolen vehicle at a fast-food drive-through on St Albans Road in St Albans. As officers approached, the driver allegedly tried to flee, colliding with an unmarked police vehicle and bollards at the drive-through.

Detectives, with help from police dogs, arrested six teenagers at the scene. One teen allegedly resisted arrest and was bitten by a police dog.

A 16-year-old boy was charged with multiple offences, including two counts of aggravated reckless exposure of a police officer to risk by driving, criminal damage, vehicle theft, unlicensed driving, and being disguised with unlawful intent.

A 15-year-old boy was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Another 16-year-old and two 15-year-old boys were charged with theft of a motor vehicle, while one more 16-year-old boy was cautioned over the same offence.
