
Over 70,000 police personnel have been deployed across Sri Lanka to ensure security during the Local Government (LG) elections scheduled for tomorrow.
All election campaign activities officially ended at midnight on Saturday, as per the Election Commission’s election silence rules.
Between 3rd of March and 30th of April police arrested 46 candidates and 199 political supporters for violating election laws.
In the 24-hour period ending yesterday morning, 25 complaints were received, resulting in the arrest of three candidates and nine supporters.
The total number of arrests related to election law violations now stands at 245.
Over 72,000 candidates are contesting in the LG elections, which will now be held in 4,877 electoral divisions due to administrative and legal changes.
Elections will be conducted to fill positions in 339 local authorities, including 28 Municipal Councils, 36 Urban Councils, and 275 Pradeshiya Sabhas.
A total of 17,296,330 voters are eligible to cast their votes on 6th of May including more than 155,000 first-time voters.
