Police have detected more than 200 offences during a major road-policing operation targeting motorists travelling to Victoria’s alpine snowfields.

Operation Eastern Snow focused on roads around Mount Buller, Falls Creek and Mount Hotham, with police paying particular attention to speeding, dangerous driving and heavy vehicles.

Over a three-day period last weekend, officers detected 213 offences, including 142 speeding offences, 27 unregistered vehicles and 21 unsafe vehicles issued with defect notices.

Police also recorded 13 heavy-vehicle offences, nine seatbelt offences, nine unlicensed or disqualified drivers, three drug-driving offences and one drink-driving offence.

Authorities are reminding motorists to slow down, drive to the conditions, take regular breaks and ensure their vehicles are properly equipped for alpine roads.

Drivers entering Victorian alpine areas during the snow season must carry wheel chains and fit them when instructed. Failing to carry chains can result in a 418-dollar fine, while failing to fit them when required can attract a penalty of up to 1,046 dollars.

Police are also urging visitors to clear snow from their vehicles before leaving the snowfields, as falling snow can create dangerous conditions for other motorists.

Operation Eastern Snow will continue throughout August as Victoria’s snow season reaches its peak.
