Pod of bottlenose dolphins found dead near Wilpattu

The Wildlife Department confirmed today that a pod of Common Bottlenose Dolphins was found dead near the sea border of Wilpattu National Park, close to the Kollan Kanaththa area.

The discovery was reported by wildlife officers from the Mollikulama Wildlife Security Office.

A total of 11 dolphins were found dead, and the findings were submitted to the Puttalam Magistrate.

Wildlife veterinarians Chandana Jayasinghe and W.L.U. Madhuwanthi conducted post-mortem examinations, suspecting the dolphins died after becoming entangled in a fishing net.

Samples from the dolphins have been sent to the Peradeniya Veterinary Faculty for further analysis, with the final report still pending.
