PM says former leaders’ support excluded from fundraising over corruption allegations

The government will not seek the support of former leaders who were involved in corruption during past disaster situations in the current fundraising process, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya said yesterday.

Addressing Parliament, she said both the public and the international community have come forward to support Sri Lanka due to the trust placed in the government’s commitment to good governance and transparency.

Responding to a suggestion by MP Rauff Hakeem that former Presidents should be involved in appealing for international assistance, the Prime Minister said it would be better to avoid engaging leaders who have lost public trust.

“I propose that we do not involve former leaders who were accused of corruption during disasters in this fundraising effort. The trust earned by this government through uncorrupt governance has been a key reason why the people and the international community are willing to help us,” she said.
