Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, officially launched STEM Feed in Sri Lanka, a new in-app feature on TikTok designed to provide credible content in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The initiative marks a significant step in reimagining how education can be accessed, shared, and strengthened in a digital-first world, creating new opportunities for Sri Lanka’s youth to engage with digital learning.
Speaking at the launch held today (11) at the ICT Hotel Ratnadipa in Colombo, the Prime Minister said, “Our task is not to shield children from technology, but to guide them to use it wisely, critically, and creatively, so that it becomes a tool for growth rather than harm.”
In her keynote address, Dr. Amarasuriya highlighted the government’s establishment of a Task Force bringing together officials, educators, academics, technology experts, child protection advocates, and private sector partners to build an inclusive, future-ready, and resilient education system.
She also praised global platforms like TikTok for aligning with national priorities by inspiring youth in STEM fields and making knowledge engaging beyond textbooks. The Prime Minister further encouraged expanding STEM to STEAM—including Arts and Humanities—to help create an innovative, balanced, and empowered younger generation.
Commenting on the launch, Ferdous Mottakin, Head of Public Policy & Government Relations for South Asia at TikTok, said the initiative was not only about broadening access to educational content but also about ensuring learning takes place in a safe, transparent, and trusted digital environment.
The event was attended by Ferdous Mottakin, Secretary to the Prime Minister Pradeep Saputhanthri, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, Chairman of the National Education Commission Prof. A. Sarath Ananda, along with senior government officials, media personnel, and content creators.
