A meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office under the guidance of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya to address issues faced by university non-academic employees.

During the discussion, trade union representatives raised concerns over the reduction in salary rates, the MCA allowance, the 20% allowance, and the method of calculating overtime payments.

The unions highlighted that salary reductions—from 20% to 11%, and currently from 11% to 6.94% in line with existing salary adjustments—were pressing issues requiring immediate resolution. They also noted that while non-academic salaries were previously aligned with government employees, the gap had gradually narrowed over the years.

Representatives added that despite discussions with political authorities and the Department of Management Services, no satisfactory solutions had yet been reached regarding the MCA allowance, 20% allowance, and overtime calculations.

The shortage of non-academic staff and delays in new recruitments were also raised. While the matter of new appointments had been addressed, further study will be conducted on the remaining issues, with permanent solutions to be implemented following consultations with the Vice-Chancellors of all universities.
