PM Harini pledges full support to rebuild lives of disaster-affected citizens

The empathy of our people remains one of the greatest strengths of our nation, and I extend my sincere gratitude to all who have shown compassion during this difficult time.

I also wish to acknowledge the foreign nations that have stood with us, offering assistance, assessing our needs, and extending diplomatic support. I express my heartfelt appreciation to all foreign governments, their representatives, and international organisations who have supported Sri Lankans in multiple ways.

In addition, Sri Lankans living and working abroad, together with their organisations, have stepped forward to help rebuild our nation and support affected families. No matter where they reside, they have united in solidarity with their motherland, and for that, I am deeply grateful.

I extend my appreciation to journalists, media institutions, social media activists, and responsible citizens who provided accurate and timely information throughout the crisis. Their service has been vital in guiding rescue operations, ensuring coordination, and keeping the public informed. At the same time, we observed attempts by some to spread misinformation for personal gain. Addressing such challenges and maintaining the integrity of public information is essential, and your responsible service is invaluable.

I also gratefully acknowledge the Secretary to the Ministry of Education for coordinating efforts across all sectors during this emergency.

Further appreciation is extended to the Commissioner General of Examinations, Deputy Commissioners General, and the entire staff of the Department of Examinations for safeguarding examination papers, securing answer scripts, protecting examination centres, and ensuring the continuation of examinations under extremely difficult conditions. Their unwavering work reflects exceptional professionalism and dedication.

I recall with deep sorrow the heart-wrenching tragedy where the Assistant Coordinating Officer of the Talawakelle Sumanasara Maha Vidyalaya regional collection centre lost his wife and children in a landslide while he was on duty fulfilling examination responsibilities.

Similarly, I extend appreciation to all principals, teachers, and school staff who worked tirelessly to protect school premises, assist affected families, and ensure that examinations proceeded without disruption. My thanks also go to provincial education secretaries, directors, and all provincial and district officials for their exemplary service during this crisis.

I acknowledge the efforts of staff across the Department of Examinations and the Ministry of Education who coordinated relief, managed information, and responded promptly to emerging challenges.

I also recognise the contributions of institutions in the higher education and vocational training sectors. Their support—providing resources, facilities, and trained personnel—demonstrates true national solidarity. I extend gratitude as well to student unions of universities and higher education institutions for their cooperation.

One of our foremost responsibilities during this period is to ensure uninterrupted education for our children and to restore their psychological well-being. We look forward to your continued support in this mission. As a Government, we remain firmly committed to this responsibility.

The collective effort across ministries, districts, provinces, schools, and universities shows that our education system is truly one united family. As Minister of Education, I acknowledge with gratitude the contributions of all who took part in this national task.

The strength of our nation lies in its people and their compassionate hearts. We are proud of the generosity shown by citizens who continue to face adversity with empathy and resilience. Even in times of disaster, their active, humane, and compassionate spirit reflects our national character.

The simple yet profound act of a mother—who, despite her own hardships, stepped forward to donate two packets of Panadol—stands as a powerful example of the kindness and unity of our people.

This is a difficult period, and a challenging journey lies ahead. We must face it with perseverance. Acting with compassion, love, and understanding toward one another is essential. The pain we feel for the lives lost will remain with us, yet we must move forward—rising from this tragedy with unity, courage, and renewed strength.

I once again thank all those who trust the Government’s efforts and stand together with us. I call upon all Members of Parliament to set aside political differences and join hands in rebuilding our country.

Despite numerous challenges—including power outages and difficulties in accessing water and food—the patience and strength you have displayed reflect the resilience of our entire nation.

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya expressed her profound gratitude to the people for their courage, contributions, and unity throughout this difficult period, the statement added.
