Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has held discussions with a delegation from the United Nations Children’s Fund on ongoing efforts to support the recovery of the education sector following the impact of Cyclone Ditwah.
The meeting, held at Temple Trees on June 12, focused on the implementation of activities outlined in the report titled “Cyclone Ditwah Education Emergency Response Plan: Phase 1 Progress Updates (January–April 2026).”
During the discussions, both sides reviewed the progress achieved during the initial phase of the emergency response and explored future interventions aimed at assisting children and schools affected by the disaster.
The Prime Minister and the UNICEF delegation also exchanged views on strengthening cooperation to ensure the continuity of education and safeguard the well-being of children impacted by the cyclone.
The discussions highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts to restore educational services and provide necessary support to affected communities.
The UNICEF delegation included Emma Brigham, UNICEF Representative, Begona Arellano, Deputy Representative, and other senior UNICEF officials.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Government of Sri Lanka and UNICEF to support the recovery of the education sector and ensure that affected children continue to have access to quality learning opportunities.
