PM Harini gets 1,000 daily letters on issues

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya revealed that she receives nearly 1,000 letters daily, with about 900 highlighting issues that could be resolved at the village level.

Speaking at a public meeting in Kolonnawa on April 16, she emphasized the need for properly functioning local and urban councils to address such grassroots problems.

The Prime Minister noted that many local issues end up at the national level due to the inefficiency or absence of local governance structures.

She expressed concern that time spent dealing with these issues prevents her from focusing on broader national responsibilities.

Amarasuriya stressed the importance of building a structured system that operates from top to bottom with a unified vision.

She highlighted the upcoming local government elections on May 6 as a crucial step in enabling this transformation.

The Prime Minister described the transformation as complex but necessary, acknowledging the significant work and change required by all stakeholders.

“This is a journey we’ve only just begun,” she said, calling for collective effort and understanding to achieve meaningful reform.
