
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya took part in the policy and research forum “Unlocking the Gender Dividend: Driving Policy Change Through Knowledge” organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Sri Lanka today (27th of August ) at the Galle Face Hotel.
At the event, four landmark reports were officially presented to the Prime Minister, providing policymakers, researchers, and civil society with crucial evidence and policy recommendations aimed at addressing persistent gender inequalities and emerging challenges in Sri Lanka, with the goal of building a more inclusive and equitable society, the Prime Minister’s Media Division said.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Amarasuriya emphasized that every woman and girl must be able to live with dignity, feel safe, and contribute fully to the life of the nation. She stressed that when women are empowered, the entire country moves forward.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the issue of unpaid care work, which disproportionately affects women. She noted that enabling women to balance caregiving and work participation is vital for the nation’s progress.
The forum was attended by Kunle Adeniyi, UNFPA Sri Lanka Representative, Member of Parliament Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe, and the Secretary to the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs.
