Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized that Colombo’s religious and cultural diversity makes it a uniquely beautiful city and called on residents to work together to make it the most beautiful city in the country.
Speaking at public gatherings in Colombo, the Prime Minister said the National People’s Power (NPP) has succeeded in uniting all communities without discrimination.
She pointed out that the Colombo Municipal Council, with an annual revenue of Rs. 30 billion, is among the wealthiest local government bodies, but past leaders lacked empathy and failed to use those resources to improve the lives of residents.
The Prime Minister criticized the council’s reputation as a “den of corruption” and stressed the need to change this image.
She said the people made historic choices in the last Presidential and Parliamentary elections, ushering in a government that truly represents the people and responsibly manages public funds.
Rejecting any allegations of corruption, she said the current government, under President Anura Kumara, has shown how a nation should be governed.
She also highlighted the need to reform the education system, noting that funds have already been allocated for key areas like preschools, roads, water and waste management, and drainage systems through the first national budget.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya said these investments were made through great effort and must not be misused. She stressed that the new government has stabilized the economy and is now focused on driving growth and development.
