PM Harini calls for introduction of age-appropriate sex education in schools

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized the need to introduce an age-appropriate sex education program for school children to help prevent sexual misconduct and abuse.

Speaking at a public awareness program in Kandy, organized to brief Kandy District representatives on new education reforms, the Prime Minister said that the initiative will be developed and implemented based on expert recommendations and guidance.

Dr. Amarasuriya explained that a book suitable for Grade 6 students has already been prepared, noting that the Ministry of Health — particularly the Family Health Bureau — has consistently highlighted the importance of providing sex education to children. She pointed out that with the rising trend of child sexual abuse and harassment in the country, it is vital to equip children with knowledge on how to protect themselves.

The Prime Minister further stated that the National Child Protection Authority has also identified this as a serious concern and stressed the importance of educating children about body safety. Discussions are currently underway with relevant ministries and authorities to finalize the details of the program.

“A final decision has not yet been made on when and at what age this will be introduced,” she said, adding that the aim is to provide appropriate education as children’s bodies begin to change, ensuring it is delivered in a manner suitable for their age. All measures, she affirmed, are being taken in line with expert advice from the health sector.
