PM Harini calls for compassionate doctors as Expert Committee meets

Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya has stressed the need to introduce a new dimension to Sri Lanka’s medical education system to produce doctors with compassion and discipline.

She made the remarks during the inaugural meeting of the expert committee appointed to draft a National Policy on Medical Education, held recently at the Ministry of Education.

The committee has been tasked with preparing a comprehensive policy framework aimed at strengthening medical education in line with the country’s national healthcare needs.

Initial discussions focused on identifying existing challenges, proposing both short-term and long-term solutions, and implementing reforms that would directly benefit the country’s future and public wellbeing.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya emphasised that special attention should be given to curriculum reforms, evaluation systems, clinical training, medical research, faculty staffing, and infrastructure development within medical education institutions.

She also highlighted the importance of introducing proper awareness programmes for students selecting medical courses and carrying out broader reforms in general and higher education to produce doctors capable of meeting modern healthcare demands with professionalism and empathy.
