PM Harini affirms government’s commitment to protect religious and cultural heritage

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya affirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding Sri Lanka’s religious and cultural heritage.

She made these remarks during a ceremony at Temple Trees organized by the Buddha Sravaka Caring Centre in Padukka, where tablet computers containing electronic versions of the Tripitaka, along with printed texts, were donated to 60 university Bhikkhus under the guidance of Venerable Kurupita Dhammananda Thero.

Presenting the tablets to the Maha Sangha, the Prime Minister highlighted the challenge rapid technological advancements pose to preserving spiritual traditions. However, she emphasized that this initiative shows how technology can be meaningfully used to teach, preserve, and promote Buddhist philosophy.

Dr. Amarasuriya noted that the Tripitaka is more than a collection of religious texts; it forms the ethical, philosophical, and spiritual foundation of Buddhist discipline. Providing young Bhikkhus faster access to these sacred texts strengthens bonds within the monastic community and offers opportunities to study and live the Dhamma in today’s world.

She assured that the government supports such projects as vital for the ethical and spiritual well-being of society, praising the Buddha Shravaka Caring Centre for its care and service to ailing Bhikkhus as an embodiment of the nation’s highest ideals.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to all who contributed to this meritorious endeavor, acknowledging both material and spiritual support as a reflection of the community’s generosity and collective spirit.

The event was attended by Venerable Kutawatte Saranankara from Malaysia, Venerable Kadahingala Dhammarakkhita Thero, and Maha Sangha and devotees from Malaysia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, according to the Prime Minister’s Media Division.
