Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya says the government is taking necessary legal steps over the recent financial fraud involving unauthorized access to the computer system of the Department of External Resources under the Ministry of Finance.
She said investigations have already begun, with international assistance also being provided. The Prime Minister noted that the Government of Australia has expressed its willingness to support the probe, as confirmed by the Australian High Commissioner.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya also criticised the opposition, accusing them of making baseless claims and attempting to disrupt the government through false allegations against ministers.
“A democratic country needs an opposition. However, the opposition still does not seem to understand what the people expect from it. They are attempting to gain power by any means,” she said.
Referring to reports that the opposition plans to bring a no-confidence motion against her, she said she is ready to face it in Parliament.
“They even said they would bring a no-confidence motion against me. I am waiting for them to present it in Parliament so I can respond with facts,” she added.
She made these remarks after paying respects to the Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Abhidana Mahanayake Thero of the Malwathu Chapter in Kandy today (24).
Her comments come amid ongoing investigations into the cyber theft involving the Treasury, where Finance Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma confirmed efforts are underway to recover as much as possible of the USD 2.5 million reportedly stolen by cyber criminals.
