PM briefs MPs on proposed education reform plan

The first awareness programme on Sri Lanka’s proposed education reforms—set to launch in 2026—was held on Friday (July 11) at the Parliament complex, under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

During the session, Members of Parliament were briefed on the core objectives, guiding principles, and structural changes underpinning the new education system. Key areas discussed included curriculum revisions, reform pillars, implementation procedures, and teacher training mechanisms.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Education, the National Institute of Education, and the National Education Commission will jointly oversee the implementation and monitoring of these reforms.

The reforms aim to build a future-ready citizenry capable of navigating the complexities of the 21st century while promoting sustainable national development and peacebuilding.

MPs present at the event offered feedback and suggestions, with particular attention paid to ensuring that the reforms are inclusive of children with special needs and disabilities.

The discussion was attended by Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madura Seneviratne, senior officials from education bodies, and several Members of Parliament.
