PM announces plan to appoint salary commission to address public sector pay disparities

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya announced that a salary commission will be appointed this year to address salary disparities in the principal service and several other sectors within the public service.

Speaking in Parliament today (06), the Prime Minister said the proposed commission is expected to provide a sustainable solution to existing salary imbalances across the public sector.

She noted that extensive discussions have already been held with school principals and principals’ associations regarding salary issues affecting the principal service.

According to the Prime Minister, the government is continuing these discussions in an effort to reach a lasting and fair solution.

Dr. Amarasuriya added that, in line with government policy, the salary commission will be established this year and is expected to recommend measures to resolve the disparities.

She further stated that recent salary increases had created imbalances not only in the education sector but also in several other public service sectors, making it necessary to find a comprehensive and sustainable solution through the commission.

The Prime Minister also said that specific proposals relating to the concerns of school principals will be submitted to the commission for consideration.
